Marcus Elieser Bloch

German ichthyologist (the branch of zoology devoted to fish) Marcs Elieser Bloch (1723-1799) sent his son all over Europe to collect as many different fish specimens as he could.  In addition to being one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century, he was also a practicing physician.  Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische is his 12 volume master work and many parts of it have been digitized here.
